Shaking his head softly, he suddenly flinched from a sting that went through his spine. He fell down to the ground, luckily the boy stretched his arms to prevent himself from falling face first. He pulled himself up together and sat down, one knee folded against his chest as he looked up towards L, who was looking back at him with a dull yet curious expression.

L must’ve been curious what was the cause of the sudden fall—but Near didn’t care. He merely shrug it off and he started to twirl strands of white hair through his index and thumb.

”I understand, L. It wasn’t polite of me by saying all these things, you are L, and I am merely a successor of you. But, that doesn’t mean I’ll be thrown aside, I am not plaything, L.”

“….” That worried L deeply. What had just happened to the boy? A small seizure? Had he possibly suffered some injury recently? Or perhaps this was something that happened normally—a medical condition that he isn’t aware of. Near does not seem concerned as well, so it must be something that is not serious.

Out of respect for the boy’s dignity, L deems it worth ignoring; if it’s something detrimental to his health, surely Wammy is aware of it, and goes to lengths to make it better? As he reasoned with and reassured him self, L crouches down where he is. To maintain eye contact with near.

“Naturally. You are your own man, Near.” Although I technically used both you and Mihael to finish the case. “Perhaps we should leave this altercation behind us, and have Wammy bring us a snack? It is about tea time, after all. I would like to speak of events that have happened during my absence. I have been very out of the loop, so to speak.”

Matt sighed. He should of realized L wouldn’t understand any of this, he did die before Light was brutally killed. “You should do more research L, you’re a little behind on the information that has been spread around.”

“Mello left to go eat a few minutes ago, he was here with me before then, saying something about hide and seek. He’s a little off as well.”

“….” L stares at Matt for a few seconds, unblinking. Had he heard that right? There was information he isn’t aware of? That discomfited L, but he couldn’t afford to spend time worrying rather than working. He would have to do more research, as Matt said.

How dares he.

At the moment he didn’t care at all about L being back, he didn’t care that he was about to lash out towards L, he never felt like this before; his stomach was stirring with an unknown emotion which Near couldn’t comprehend and he felt like he wanted to punch a wall. But why?

Perhaps L thought of like a mere toy. Only to be fulfilling his job once he’s gone, but since he simply returned, that Near wasn’t needed anymore. To be thrown away, like a mere plaything.

Never would the albino accept that, never in his whole life.

That expression…had he somehow upset Near? Perhaps the idea of being tossed aside like a doll had somehow gotten into his head. It could also be possible that his attachment to and obsession with being “L” had grown into something all-consuming, his life now revolving around it. Certainly, challenging—although L does more than simply challenge—his new status would certainly upset the boy.

Perhaps this is a matter that needs to be dealt with more delicately. The last thing he needs is a genius child to turn bad guy and wreak havoc on the world—one of those was more than enough.

“Nate. I needed you and Mello. Without your help, and my removal from the case, Kira very well may have remained at large. I do not intend to come back as L—or come back at all.”

“Just as with the Kira case, the world needs not just one person to look after it. Please try to understand.”

The tone was harsh, rather abrupt and filled with slight anger as grey eyes narrowed even further. ”You’re right, for me, you’re alive, but for humanity, you’re dead. I am the new you, L is dead, long live Near.”

The last sentence came out threateningly, followed by a smirk. ”Why don’t you return to the world of the dead, L? You’re not needed here.” He didn’t care that L’s successor, and supposted to respect him—and since he was back, L could take Near’s place again, only anonymous.

Near didn’t want that—he was the new L, and he was going to let it stay like that, L was the past, and Near is the future.

“I made a mistake—error of judgement. Humanity still needs me.” L had always known the two boys to be distinctly different, although he had no personal knowledge of them. He knew Mello to be impulsive, aggressive, volatile; he knew Near to be detached, unmotivated, incapable of compassion. Neither of these two were a complete mixture of what “L” needed, he had eventually concluded. As Near has just shown him, he is driven by jealousy.

L is convinced that one must be selfless to fill his role. That one must feel compassion for other human beings, having more motivation than being interested in cases “including ten or more deaths only”.

L looks at the man for a few moments before simply turning away and going back to what he was previously engaged with before his interruption. There is clearly no more to say on the subject of where and how he is where is, and L is not particularly inclined to encourage further conversation.
